MSO, Cade Chapel partner in musical offering for Jackson
Free concert rejoices in the rousing power of music, both classical and brand new
Jackson, Mississippi — A unique collaboration between the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church will showcase acclaimed, Jackson-rooted talents — Teneia Sanders, 5th Child, Tougaloo Chamber Singers, Cade Chapel Choir, MSO musicians and more — in a musical gift to the city. This free, open-to-the public concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 13, at Cade Chapel M.B. Church, 1000 W. Ridgeway St. in Jackson.
MSO’s “Symphony in the Community: A Collaboration with Cade Chapel” is an hour-long celebration of spiritual and secular music that pulls together stirring songs and instrumentals, hip-hop and soul, centuries-old orchestral classics and exciting new material.
Jackson native and internationally touring singer/songwriter Sanders’ song “Breathe” premieres at the concert, featuring Jackson rap artist 5th Child and Tougaloo Chamber Singers in the work which gives voice to the ongoing conversation about the lives lost due to racism and police brutality in our nation. Additional highlights include Sanders performing her song “Move,” John Legend’s “Glory” from the 2014 film Selma with 5th Child joined by Cade Chapel’s Choir and Dance Ministry, Margaret Walker’s poems set to music by Randy Klein, and MSO musicians bringing works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Johann Sebastian Bach and Florence Price to vivid life.
The creative venture sprang from the connections and parallel missions of MSO Music Director and Conductor Crafton Beck and Cade Chapel’s Rev. Reginald Buckley. “It had become increasingly clear that many of the Mississippi Symphony’s goals of serving the community seemed to be shared by both the music ministry and the larger ministry goals of the church,” Beck said of the partnership. “It just makes so much sense for us to go shoulder-to-shoulder and hand-in-hand with Rev. Buckley and Cade Chapel and make something really special.”
Buckley praised the potential for outreach. “The complex beauty of the human experience is perhaps expressed best through a unique combination of faith, art and spirit,” he said. “Bringing a variety of musical genres and artistic expressions together will invite us to more deeply explore and experience each other and appreciate our interconnectedness.
“We are excited to begin this journey with Crafton and MSO as we merge, blend and fuse together something necessarily new,” the pastor said.
As MSO embarks on its 78th season, this adventurous matinee joins a full roster of more than 20 major concerts and dozens of educational performances across the state, including a broad range of music genres in a variety of venues.
