New Season of Genius for Symphony also brings new leadership

Jackson, Mississippi — The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is proud to announce Janet Reihle as its new President and Executive Director. A lifelong Mississippian, Reihle brings a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership, development, event planning, and tourism, making her an innovative addition to the organization.

“Janet’s energy, enthusiasm, and deep understanding of Mississippi stood out among dozens of candidates in our nationwide search for a new leader,” said Hugh Parker, co-chairman of MSO’s search committee. “She knows a lot about Mississippi and the people in Mississippi. That was a real draw for us,” he said, noting too her exceptional communication skills, broad-based experience in development and management, and passion for the arts that “made her a perfect fit to lead MSO into its next chapter and the upcoming new season.”

Reihle, of Flowood, grew up in Sebastopol, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi. Her career in the Jackson area spans 22 years, serving in various leadership roles with the Metro YMCAs of Mississippi and, most recently, as Executive Director of the Chamber of Flowood & Visitors Center. She was also part of Mississippi State University’s first Excellence in Tourism Leadership program and holds the Professional in Destination Management distinction from Destination International.

Though Reihle does not have a background in orchestral music, her ideas about symphony promotion and enhancing visibility led MSO leaders to encourage her to apply for the position. “The Mississippi Symphony’s story is so important to tell – 80 years of success, and currently perhaps its most talented ensemble yet – what an incredible legacy to be part of,” Reihle said. “I’m honored to champion this organization and help expand its impact across our community and state.”

Reihle originally pursued a music industry major before shifting to journalism and public relations, a background that has fueled her success in nonprofit storytelling, community engagement, and business development. She now aims to use those skills and community relationships to highlight MSO’s talented musicians, expand opportunities for performances, and support music education programs.

“This role needs someone to shine the spotlight on MSO’s important work. The symphony is more than entertainment – it’s necessary. Supporting the arts is essential,” Reihle said. “Music can be a unifier, drawing people of all backgrounds and ages together in a shared experience through the power of a live performance. It develops minds, attracts businesses, and fosters collaboration, and I’m committed to ensuring that MSO’s music is accessible and their standard of excellence in performance continues to thrive.”

Reihle will continue to serve the Flowood Chamber of Commerce as a member of the board of directors. She also serves on the board for the Mississippi Tourism Association and feels strongly that the MSO can contribute to the state’s broader tourism initiatives.

“Tourism is Mississippi’s fourth-largest industry and, as the ‘Birthplace of America’s Music,’ our state has a rich musical heritage,” she said. “MSO has an important role to play in that story, and I look forward to strengthening our contributions.”

As she steps into her new role, Reihle’s top priorities include expanding programming, increasing community engagement, and supporting the organization’s mission to make live symphonic music accessible to all. She encourages patrons, alumni, and arts supporters to share their experiences and insights with her to help shape MSO’s future.

Reihle said, “My first goal is to fill every seat and make sure these incredible musicians perform for the biggest audiences they’ve ever seen – because they deserve it.”
